A record-setting cold and rainy June in New Hampshire, and house hunting through homes old and new, has your blogger thinking about sump pumps. These unsung heroes of the basement keep your mechanical systems and storage items above water, and your basement relatively dry. But sump pumps are simply mechanical motors which can fail, and most run on electricity, which can also fail, often just when you need it most, during a heavy storm.

Increased Need Seen for Roadside Service |

More motorists are expected to need roadside service this summer than last. AAA estimates 7.3 million motorists will be stranded this summer, an increase of 1.5% over the same period last year. With gas prices averaging $1.50 less than last year, overall vehicle miles driven are expected to increase significantly. Additionally, in a down economy people are holding on to cars longer and possibly forgoing regular maintenance, which can both lead to an increase in breakdowns.
